Welcome

It is with great sorrow that we come together today with the departure of our president and dear friend, Fr. Julio Giulietti, S.J. We have all come here to seek the truth, and to know and understand what has happened within the university walls and what has become of the reputation of WJU. In this light, please invite anyone to read the blog and feel free to comment as you wish.

Any posts with profanity are not welcome, otherwise, please speak your mind. You are a part of this university and we want to hear your voice!

Another Sexual Predator on WJU Campus

Still another sexual predator on WJU campus: The Rev. Felix Owino, a faculty member in the philosophy department of Wheeling Jesuit University, was arrested on July 8 in Fairfax, Va. for aggravated sexual battery of an eleven-year-old girl. He is being jailed without bond until a 9/2/10 hearing. See the breaking story and photo posted this morning in the Washington Post!

  1. While this is certainly another blow for WJU and it's PR gurus, Owino has yet to be convicted. It might be best to wait for a court decision before raising the specter of predatory faculty members stalking the campus.

Father Guilietti is gone, never to return. Perhaps it's time to "retool" this blog into a positive force for change. WJU still has potential for excellence; more so, now that Zook has fled campus. The former Academic Dean was not as highly esteemed as many realized, particularly among faculty in the liberal arts. While she had a cadre of sycophantic followers, many felt that she contributed enormously to the university's shift away from the liberal arts. There were a number of academically questionable moves and programs implemented under her tenure as she seemed far more concerned with statistics than academic integrity. I agree with a previous writer on the subject regarding her propensity for wreaking havoc with those who didn't share her narrow vision of what the university should be. I might add that Zook could very well have been a leading player in Giulietti's ouster. The two held radically different views regarding interaction with students and the role of the liberal arts.

Her departure might be an indication that members of the campus community can truly explore the university's mission in a more equitable fashion, and we should see this as a positive event as we approach the 2010-11 academic year. The university's culture remains close minded and resistant to positive change, there is little transparency, there is palpable friction between divisions, students transfer away at a high rate and the school's mission remains hazy. These are ongoing issues that need to be addressed and changed.

Giulietti's sacking was horrific, unjust and symptomatic of a corrupt and unethical board and administration. There is no possibility of bringing him back; however if we focus on existing issues, it may be possible to ameliorate some of the university's woes.

    Notations on Anonymous's above comment:

    (1) Anon. says we should not raise the specter of stalking predators because Felix "has yet to be convicted." Wrong, our children need to be protected before conviction, and that is why Felix in NOW incarcerated sans bond. Felix may never be convicted if the Jesuits buy off the complaining witness as they did in the Tommy Gleeson case. Al Capone was never convicted of a violent crime.

    (2) Anon. says "Father Guilietti is gone, never to return." Never say never. MacArthur returned, and so too may Guilietti.

    (3) Anon. says "it's time to 'retool' this blog into a positive force for change." This blog has been "a positive force for change" since its inception. Without this blog alumni would know nothing of the clandestine conniving of the McAteer/Shea cartel and their puppet Stockhausen/Gleeson/O'Donnell troika.

    (4) Anon. says "Giulietti's sacking was horrific, unjust and symptomatic of a corrupt and unethical board and administration." You got that one right! So focus on getting rid of the "corrupt and unethical board and administration" starting with accused homosexual predator Thomas Gleeson, S.J.

  3. Can anyone tell me WHY Fr Owino was moved from Magdelen college in NH... and accepted into the Wheeling-Charleston diocese?

I have big concerns for the kids who attended St. Paul's Parish elementary school in Weirton, WV.
